You press the power button, the little red light on the front blinks a few times, and nothing else happens. No picture, no sound, no logo. The blinking is not random — on most televisions it is the set telling you it has detected a problem and stopped itself before something got worse.

What the standby light normally means
Under normal conditions the standby LED is doing something very simple: it tells you the power supply's standby circuit is alive and the set is waiting for a signal from the remote. Solid red or amber in standby, off or a different colour when running — the exact convention varies by brand.
The important part is that a standby light means mains power is reaching the set and part of the power supply is working. A completely dead television with no light at all is a different, and often more serious, situation.
What flashing indicates
When the light blinks in a repeating pattern, most manufacturers are using it as a diagnostic code. The set attempted to start, something failed a check, and it shut down into a protected state rather than continuing.
The protection circuits are doing exactly what they were designed to do. A television that shuts itself down on a fault is far more repairable than one that keeps running with a failed component.
Blink codes are not universal
Six blinks on a Samsung does not mean the same thing as six blinks on an LG, a Hisense or a TCL — and it may not mean the same thing on two different models from the same manufacturer. What causes it
Power supply faults
The most frequent cause by a wide margin. The supply cannot produce one of the voltages the set needs, or a rail collapses the moment the panel and backlight load up. Ageing capacitors, failed regulators and surge damage are all common. In South African conditions, this is very often traceable to power quality — and the damage is usually done when supply returns after an outage, not during it.
Backlight faults
A very common cause of the protection shutdown that produces a blinking light. If an LED string in the backlight has failed open, the driver detects the fault and shuts down. The giveaway: some sets in this condition will produce sound for a second or two before shutting off, and if you shine a torch at the screen at an angle during that moment you may see a faint image. That means the panel is alive and this is a repairable fault.
Mainboard problems
A failed regulator or a processor that never gets far enough into its startup sequence to signal the power supply to proceed. Less common than power and backlight faults, but it happens — particularly after surge events.
Protection circuit trips
Over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection can all latch the set into a shutdown state. Sometimes the underlying problem is transient and a proper power cycle clears it. Sometimes the protection is doing its job correctly because a component genuinely has failed.
Remote control and power button problems
Worth ruling out early because it costs nothing. A remote with flat batteries or a failed infrared LED cannot wake the set. A physical power button stuck in the pressed position — which happens with sets mounted tightly against a wall bracket or pushed hard against furniture — can hold the television in a state where it never starts properly.
Connected devices
A faulty HDMI device or a soundbar with an earthing problem can pull the set into a fault condition. Rarer than the causes above, but it takes two minutes to eliminate.
Firmware and software

Safe troubleshooting steps, in order
Every step below is safe and none of them involve opening the television. Work through them in sequence.
- Check the remote. Fresh batteries. Point a phone camera at the remote's emitter and press a button — most phone cameras show the infrared LED as a faint purple flash. No flash means the remote, not the television.
- Use the TV's own power button. Usually underneath the panel, behind the logo, or on the rear right. Check it is not jammed against a wall bracket or furniture. If the set responds to its own button but not the remote, you have found the problem.
- Disconnect every external device. HDMI leads, decoder, soundbar, game console, USB drives, aerial, network cable. Leave only the power lead. Try again.
- Do a full power cycle. Switch off at the wall, unplug, then press and hold the television's own power button for about 30 seconds to discharge residual power. Leave it unplugged for 10 minutes, then reconnect and try. This resolves latched protection states more often than anything else on this list.
- Check the wall socket. Plug something you know works into the same outlet. Then plug the television directly into a different socket, bypassing multiplugs and extension leads.
- Check the power cable. Look for damage and make sure it is fully seated at both ends. Swap it for a known-good matching lead if you have one.
- Wait and retry. If the set has been running hot, give it half an hour to cool completely and try again. A fault that clears when cold and returns when warm is important information.
- Observe and record the exact LED behaviour. Count the blinks, note the length of the pause between groups, and note whether the pattern is identical every time. Photograph or video it if you can. Also note any sound — clicking, ticking or a faint high-pitched whine from the back.
Do not open the television
The power supply stores a dangerous charge for a long time after the set is unplugged, and the high-voltage sections are not safe to probe without the right equipment and training. There is also nothing a consumer can usefully fix in there. If the steps above have not resolved it, the next step is a diagnosis, not a screwdriver.
What a technician checks
Once the set is on the bench, the sequence is fairly consistent:
- Read the blink code against the service documentation for that specific model, if one is published.
- Measure the standby rail first — if standby voltage is wrong, the fault is on the power supply's standby section.
- Measure the main rails while the set attempts to start, watching for a rail that comes up and then collapses. That single measurement usually identifies whether the problem is the supply, the load, or the mainboard.
- Test the backlight independently of the driver, which immediately confirms or eliminates a failed LED string.
- Inspect and test the power supply components properly — capacitors measured rather than judged by appearance, plus regulators, diodes and switching devices.
- Check the mainboard's own regulators and the signal it sends to enable the supply.
- Trace surge damage from the mains input inwards where the history points that way.
In most cases this identifies the fault within the first part of the process, and the answer is frequently a repairable power supply or backlight problem rather than a failed panel.
Is it worth repairing?
Usually, yes. This particular symptom tends to point at components on the cheaper end of the scale — power supply and backlight faults sit near the bottom of the repair cost hierarchy, and both leave the expensive part of the television, the panel, untouched.
