A boot loop is one of the more unnerving faults to watch. The television starts, the manufacturer's logo appears, and just as you expect the picture to arrive the screen goes black and the whole thing starts again. And again. It looks catastrophic. Quite often, it isn't.
Boot loops sit in an unusual category: some causes are software problems you can resolve yourself in fifteen minutes, and others are hardware failures that need the set opened. This guide covers both, and where the line between them sits.
What is actually happening during a boot loop
A modern smart television is a computer. When you switch it on it runs through a startup sequence in a fixed order:
- The power supply comes up and delivers the various voltages the set needs.
- The mainboard's processor starts and loads its bootloader.
- The operating system — Tizen, webOS, VIDAA, Google TV or Android TV — loads from internal storage.
- Services, apps and the tuner initialise.
- The backlight and panel are driven and you get a picture.
A boot loop means the sequence fails somewhere and the set restarts to try again. The point at which it fails is genuinely useful diagnostic information, so it is worth watching carefully:
- Logo appears, then black, then logo again — the set is getting power and the processor is running. The failure is later in the sequence, which points towards software, storage or a supply rail dropping under load.
- Clicking or relay ticking with no logo — the power supply is trying to come up and shutting itself down. This is a power-side or protection fault rather than software.
- Backlight flashes on and off with no image — often a supply rail or panel-side problem.
- Set reaches the home screen, then restarts — usually software, an app, or heat.
What causes boot loops
Software and firmware corruption
The most common cause, and the most fixable. An update that failed partway through — because the power dropped, the network cut out, or the set was switched off mid-install — can leave the operating system in a state it cannot recover from. Load shedding during an overnight automatic update is a very South African way to end up here.
A failed or interrupted update
Related but distinct: the firmware image itself is incomplete. Some sets will retry and recover on their own after several attempts; others need a USB recovery image from the manufacturer's support site for that exact model.
Storage and memory failure
The internal flash memory that holds the operating system wears out over years. When blocks start failing, the set may boot fine sometimes and loop other times — intermittency is a strong clue. This is a hardware fault that usually means mainboard-level work.
Power supply faults
A power supply that delivers correct voltages at idle but sags when the panel and backlight load up will cause a restart at exactly the same point every time. Ageing capacitors are a classic cause, and surge damage is another. Consistency — failing at the identical moment on every attempt — points here.
Mainboard faults
Failed regulators, cracked solder joints, or a damaged processor. Sets that have taken a surge often present this way. Mainboard faults can frequently be repaired at component level rather than by replacing the entire board.
Connected devices
Underrated as a cause. A faulty HDMI device, a decoder with a damaged port, a soundbar with an earthing problem, or a USB drive the set is trying and failing to read can all stall the startup sequence. We have seen televisions written off by their owners that booted perfectly the moment everything was unplugged from the back.
Overheating
A set that boots fine from cold and loops after ten minutes is telling you something thermal. Blocked ventilation, a television sealed into a cabinet, or a failing component running hot. Sets in enclosed units in Gauteng lounges during summer are common candidates.

Things you can safely try at home
Work through these in order. All of them are safe, none require opening the television, and between them they resolve a meaningful proportion of boot loops.
- Disconnect everything from the back except power. Every HDMI cable, USB device, aerial, decoder, soundbar and network cable. Then try to start the set. If it boots, reconnect one device at a time to find the culprit.
- Do a full power cycle. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Press and hold the television's own power button for about 30 seconds — this discharges residual power in the supply. Leave it unplugged for 10 minutes, then plug in and try again. This clears more faults than people expect.
- Try a different wall socket. Ideally on a different circuit, and plugged directly into the wall rather than through a multiplug or extension lead.
- Check the power cable. Swap it for a known-good one if you have a matching lead. Damaged and loose leads cause intermittent faults that look like board failures.
- Let it try. Some sets recover on their own after several loop cycles, particularly after a failed update. Give it 15–20 minutes before intervening further.
- Check the manufacturer's support site for a firmware recovery file for your exact model number. Several brands publish a USB recovery procedure. Follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely — do not use a file for a different model.
- Try the manufacturer's factory reset key sequence if one exists for your model and can be triggered without a working menu. This is model specific; look it up for your exact model number.
- Note the exact behaviour. How far it gets, whether it fails at the same point every time, whether it is worse when warm, and any sounds. This is genuinely useful to whoever works on it next.
What not to do
Do not open the back of the television. The power supply in a TV stores a dangerous charge for a long time after it is unplugged, and there is no safe consumer-level work to be done in there. Also ignore any advice involving repeatedly plugging and unplugging at speed, or holding buttons in unusual combinations found on a forum — at best it does nothing, and at worst you interrupt a recovery routine that was about to succeed.
When the TV needs professional diagnosis
Stop and get it looked at if any of the following apply:
- The set fails at exactly the same point on every single attempt after a full power cycle with everything disconnected.
- There is clicking, ticking or buzzing from the back of the set.
- You can smell anything burnt or see discolouration around the vents.
- It boots from cold and loops once warm.
- The behaviour is intermittent — fine for days, then looping.
- It started right after a lightning storm or a power surge.
- The manufacturer's firmware recovery did not resolve it.
What a technician investigates
Roughly in this order:
- Supply rails under load. Measuring the standby and main rails while the set attempts to boot, to see whether a voltage is collapsing at the moment it restarts. This alone separates power faults from software faults.
- The power supply board. Capacitors, regulators and switching components, checked properly rather than by appearance — a capacitor can be out of specification without looking swollen.
- The mainboard. Regulators, solder integrity, and the storage device holding the operating system.
- Thermal behaviour. Running the set and watching for components heating abnormally.
- Firmware recovery at board level, including reflashing where the model and the storage condition allow it.
- Surge damage tracing, following the path from the mains input inwards if the history suggests it.
Does it differ by brand?
The underlying causes are the same across manufacturers, but the presentation varies.
- Samsung sets running Tizen tend to loop cleanly at the logo when the software is at fault. Samsung publishes USB firmware for many models, which makes recovery worth attempting.
- LG webOS sets often behave similarly and also support USB firmware recovery on many models.
- Hisense models running VIDAA are frequently resolved by a full power cycle with all devices disconnected; storage-related loops on older models are a known pattern.
- TCL and other Android TV or Google TV sets can loop after an app or system update, and some models offer a recovery menu reachable with a button combination at power-on.
- Older and budget sets of any brand more often turn out to be power supply rather than software, simply because the components had less headroom to begin with.
In every case, check the support page for your exact model number rather than relying on general brand advice. Model variants within the same series often differ.
Preventing it happening again
- Use a surge-protected outlet. The most common trigger we see for both power supply damage and interrupted updates is unstable supply.
- Do not switch the set off at the wall during an update. If it says it is updating, let it finish.
- Give it ventilation. Leave a gap behind and above the television and do not seal it into a closed cabinet.
- Keep the firmware current — but update deliberately, when you are around and the power is stable, rather than leaving overnight automatic updates enabled if load shedding is frequent where you live.
