Every week someone phones and opens with a version of the same sentence: “I think it's dead, I just want to know if it's worth fixing.” It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer — but almost nobody can answer it before the television has been opened, because the two most important variables are the actual fault and the actual cost of the part.
What we can do is give you the framework we use ourselves. Once you know which component has failed, what the set originally cost, and how old it is, the decision usually makes itself.
A simple repair versus replacement rule
Start here, then adjust for the details further down.
The 50% rule, adjusted for age
If the repair costs less than half of what an equivalent new television would cost today, repairing is usually the better decision. Above that, replacement starts to make more sense.
Then adjust for age:
- Under 3 years old — repair up to about 50% of replacement cost. The rest of the set still has plenty of life in it.
- 3 to 6 years old — repair up to about 35–40%. This is the range where most sensible repairs happen.
- Over 7 years old — repair only if the cost is modest, roughly 25% or less, or if you are attached to the set for a specific reason.
Note what “equivalent” means: a comparable model at today's prices, not what you paid in 2019. Television prices have fallen substantially, which shifts the maths towards replacement more often than people expect.
That rule handles most cases. The exceptions are what the rest of this guide is about.
It all depends on what failed
A television is a stack of components with wildly different costs. Two sets with identical symptoms can have a R900 fault and a R14 000 fault. Here is the hierarchy, cheapest to most expensive.
Power supply faults — almost always worth repairing
Symptoms: completely dead, a clicking sound, a flashing red standby light that will not come on, or a set that powers off by itself. The power supply board is the most common failure we see and one of the cheapest to put right, frequently at component level rather than by replacing the whole board. On a set of any reasonable value, this is a straightforward yes.
Backlight failure — usually worth repairing
Symptoms: sound is normal, menus respond, but the screen appears black. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle in a dark room — if you can make out a faint image, the panel is alive and the backlight has failed. On most LED sets the strips or driver are replaceable. Cost scales with screen size and backlight design, and Mini-LED sets are the exception where this becomes uneconomical.
Mainboard faults — depends on the set
Symptoms: no picture at all, HDMI ports not working, no response, or the television restarting in a loop. Mainboards can often be repaired at component level. Where a full board replacement is needed, availability is the deciding factor — a mainstream model from three years ago is usually fine; a low-volume model from seven years ago may not be.
T-CON and driver faults — sometimes worth it
Symptoms: vertical or horizontal lines, half the screen dark, colour bands, a distorted or doubled image. Sometimes the T-CON board is at fault, which is repairable. Sometimes the fault is in the panel's own driver circuitry, which is not. Only a proper diagnosis tells the two apart, and this is the category where people most often assume the worst and scrap a repairable television.
Software and firmware problems — nearly always worth it
Symptoms: sluggish apps, crashes, failed updates, boot loops after an update. Often resolved without replacing hardware at all. Do not replace a television for a software fault.
Cracked or damaged panels — almost never worth repairing
The panel is the single most expensive part of a television, frequently accounting for the majority of the set's value. Replacement panels are expensive, often not stocked locally, and the labour risk is high. On all but the largest premium sets, a cracked screen means replacement. We would rather tell you that on the phone than charge you to find out.

Liquid damage — depends entirely on where it went
A spill that reached only the power supply can sometimes be cleaned and repaired. Liquid that has tracked into the panel's edge connectors is generally terminal. Corrosion also continues after the event, so a set that “worked fine afterwards” can fail weeks later. Get it looked at sooner rather than later, and do not power it up to test.
Five real-world scenarios
These are the cases we are asked about most. The reasoning matters more than the specific numbers.
1. A 3-year-old 55" mid-range set with a backlight fault
Repair. Comfortably. The panel is fine, the set has years left in it, and backlight work on a mainstream 55" is well within the 50% threshold for a set of that value. Replacing a three-year-old television because the LEDs failed is throwing away a working panel.
2. A 7-year-old 49" set with a mainboard fault
It depends — and the deciding factor is the part. If the board can be repaired at component level, it is usually worth doing; the cost is modest against any replacement. If the board must be replaced and it is discontinued, you are looking at a long wait or no part at all. At seven years, we would also check the backlight hours before recommending spending money — there is little sense fixing the board if the backlight is close behind.
3. Any television with a cracked panel
Replace. Unless it is a very large premium set still under warranty for accidental damage, the panel cost makes this a straightforward decision. Insurance is worth checking — household policies sometimes cover accidental screen damage even though manufacturer warranties do not.
4. A 4-year-old premium OLED with a power supply fault
Repair, without hesitation. This is the case where the 50% rule most clearly favours repair: the replacement cost is very high, and the failed component is one of the cheapest in the set. The same logic applies to any expensive television with an inexpensive fault. 5. A 5-year-old entry-level 43" with a panel fault
Replace. A comparable new set costs little enough today that any panel-side repair exceeds the threshold immediately. This is the clearest write-off in the list, and we will tell you so before booking a call-out.
The factors people forget
- Screen size drives cost. The same fault on a 75" set costs considerably more than on a 43" — bigger boards, bigger backlights, more labour, more risk in handling.
- What you originally paid is irrelevant. The only number that matters is what an equivalent set costs today. Sunk cost is the most common reason people over-invest in a repair.
- Parts availability sets the ceiling. A repairable fault with no obtainable part is not a repairable television. Mainstream models from the volume brands are safest here.
- Panel type changes the maths. OLED and Mini-LED sets are expensive to replace, so repair thresholds rise. Entry-level LCD sets are cheap to replace, so thresholds fall.
- A second fault changes everything. If a set arrives with a failed power supply and a backlight already at the end of its life, the honest recommendation is replacement even though each fault alone would be repairable.
- The environmental cost is real. A repaired television is one that does not go to landfill. Where the decision is genuinely marginal, that is a reasonable tiebreaker.

Before you decide the TV is dead
The most common thing we see is a customer who has already decided the panel is damaged because the screen is black — when the panel is perfectly fine and the backlight or power supply has failed. Black screen with working sound is one of the most repairable faults there is. A diagnosis costs a fraction of a new television and it is the only way to know which category you are actually in.

We are deliberately cautious about publishing prices, because a number on a web page becomes a promise in a customer's mind and TV repair genuinely does not work that way. What follows are indicative bands to help you judge whether a quote is reasonable — not a price list.
Repair cost is driven by six things: the fault, the screen size, the panel type, whether the part is repairable at component level or must be replaced, parts availability for that specific model, and whether the work is done on site or in the workshop.

Two habits protect you as a customer. First, insist on a diagnosis and a written quote before any work starts. Second, ask specifically what happens if a second fault is found once the set is open — a reputable workshop will come back to you rather than proceed and add it to the bill.
Get a diagnosis before you decide
Nobody can quote a TV repair accurately over the phone, and you should be cautious of anyone who tries. What a good technician can do on the phone is tell you which faults are likely from your description, which of those are worth pursuing, and which are almost certainly write-offs — so you do not pay for a call-out on a television that is beyond saving.
Once the set is open, you should get a clear answer: what failed, what it costs to put right, what it will cost if a second fault emerges, and whether we would recommend the repair at all. If the answer is “replace it”, that should be said plainly.
