Walk into any large retailer in Gauteng and you will see the same two names dominating the TV wall: Samsung and Hisense. They sit side by side, often at wildly different prices, sometimes with near-identical spec sheets on the shelf card. It is a confusing comparison to make in a shop, under bright lighting, with a demo reel playing that is designed to flatter every panel in the row.
We see both brands constantly on the bench. That gives a different view of them than a showroom does — not just how they look on day one, but how they behave in year four, what fails, what parts cost, and how easy they are to put right. This guide compares the two from both angles: what you get for your money, and what happens when something goes wrong.
Where Samsung and Hisense actually differ
The simplest way to frame it: Samsung sells a premium engineering reputation and charges for it. Hisense sells specification per rand and has spent the last decade closing the quality gap. Both statements were more true five years ago than they are today, which is exactly why the comparison has become difficult.
Samsung designs and manufactures a large part of its own display supply chain, and it shows most clearly at the top of the range. Their processing — the software that decides how to scale a blurry DStv broadcast up to a 65-inch 4K panel — is consistently among the best in the industry. That matters more in South Africa than people expect, because a great deal of what we actually watch is not 4K. Local broadcast and many streaming tiers deliver compressed HD, and a good scaler makes a visible difference.
Hisense competes by putting hardware features into lower price brackets than anyone expects. Local backlight dimming, Mini-LED backlights, high refresh rates and Dolby Vision support all appear in Hisense ranges at prices where Samsung is still selling a basic edge-lit panel. The trade-off is usually consistency — the processing and the software polish are not always at the same level as the hardware on the spec sheet.
One local detail worth knowing: Hisense has manufactured in Atlantis in the Western Cape since 2013, assembling televisions and refrigerators for the South African market. That local footprint is part of why their pricing and stock availability here are so aggressive, and it has a knock-on effect on spare parts that we will come back to.
Picture quality and panel technology
Nearly every television either brand sells in the mainstream is an LCD panel with an LED backlight. The marketing names describe how that backlight is arranged and what is layered on top of it.
- Edge-lit LED — LEDs sit around the rim of the panel and the light is spread across it. Cheapest to build, and the reason budget sets show grey clouding in dark scenes.
- Direct-lit / full-array local dimming — LEDs sit behind the panel in zones that can dim independently. More zones means better contrast between bright and dark areas of the same image.
- QLED (Samsung) and ULED (Hisense) — both are LCD panels with a quantum dot layer that improves colour volume and brightness. QLED is not a different panel type to LED, despite how the naming reads.
- Mini-LED — Samsung calls it Neo QLED, Hisense uses it across its upper ranges. Far smaller LEDs allow far more dimming zones, which sharply reduces the halo you see around bright objects on a dark background.
- OLED — a genuinely different technology where each pixel produces its own light. Perfect blacks, no backlight at all. Samsung sells QD-OLED models in its premium range. Hisense's presence in OLED locally has been limited and range-dependent.

In a bright Highveld lounge with afternoon sun coming through a north-facing window, a bright Mini-LED set will look better than an OLED. In a dark TV room at night, OLED wins comfortably. That is the honest version of the comparison, and it depends far more on your room than on the badge.
From a repair perspective
The more sophisticated the backlight, the more there is to go wrong — and the more expensive it is to put right. A basic edge-lit set has one or two LED strips. A Mini-LED set has a dense driver arrangement that is not economically repairable in isolation on most models. That does not make Mini-LED a bad buy; it means the backlight is a component you should think of as part of the panel, not as a cheap consumable.
Smart TV platforms: Tizen versus VIDAA
Samsung runs Tizen, its own operating system. Hisense mostly runs VIDAA, its own operating system, though some Hisense models in some ranges ship with Google TV instead. Check the specific model, not the brand.
Tizen is the more mature platform. App support is broad, updates arrive reliably for years, and the interface stays responsive on older sets for longer than most. Where it frustrates people is Samsung's refusal to support Dolby Vision — they back HDR10+ instead. If you subscribe to a service that leans on Dolby Vision, you simply do not get it on a Samsung.
VIDAA has improved a lot and handles the major services fine, including Dolby Vision on models that support it. It can feel less fluid on entry-level hardware, particularly once a few years of app updates have piled up on a set with modest memory. Google TV models sidestep that with a more familiar interface and better voice search, at the cost of a busier, more recommendation-heavy home screen.
A practical point that matters more than either interface: smart platform support has a shelf life. Apps drop support for old TV firmware long before the panel wears out. A R400 streaming stick restores a five-year-old set to full functionality, and we suggest that far more often than people expect. Do not replace a working television because Netflix stopped updating on it.
Gaming, sport and movies
Gaming
For a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, look for HDMI 2.1 with 120Hz support, VRR and ALLM on the specific model. Samsung has been consistent here across more of its range and its Game Mode input lag is excellent. Hisense competes hard on this and its upper ranges offer 120Hz and VRR at prices Samsung does not match — but on entry models the panel may be 60Hz even where the marketing talks about “game mode”. Read the panel refresh rate, not the motion-smoothing number.
Sport
Rugby and football are where motion handling shows itself. Both brands do well in their upper ranges. Where cheap sets struggle is fast horizontal panning — a camera sweeping across a stadium — which can smear on a slow 60Hz panel. If weekend sport is the main use of the television, prioritise a higher native refresh rate over screen size.
Movies
For a darkened room, contrast beats brightness. That points to OLED first, then Mini-LED with a high zone count. Dolby Vision support tips the balance towards Hisense if you watch a lot of content mastered for it.

What you will actually pay in South Africa
Prices move constantly with exchange rates, promotions and model-year changeovers, so treat the following as broad bands rather than quotes. Check current pricing at your retailer before deciding.
- 32"–43" entry-level HD or 4K — roughly R4 000 to R8 000. Bedroom and kitchen territory. Both brands compete hard here and the differences are small.
- 50"–55" 4K mid-range — roughly R8 000 to R15 000. The volume segment for South African lounges. This is where Hisense's value case is strongest.
- 65" 4K with local dimming or Mini-LED — roughly R15 000 to R30 000, with Samsung generally sitting higher in the band.
- 75"–85" premium Mini-LED or OLED — roughly R30 000 upwards, and considerably more for flagship models.
The comparison people get wrong
A R5 000 entry-level television and a R30 000 premium television from the same manufacturer are not the same product with a bigger screen. They use different panels, different backlight systems, different processors, different power supplies and different build standards. “Samsung is better than Hisense” is a meaningless claim unless you name the two specific models being compared — a mid-range Hisense will beat an entry-level Samsung on almost every measure, and the reverse is equally true.
Repairability, parts and the faults we see most
This is the part of the comparison a showroom will never give you.
Across both brands, the faults that come through the workshop are broadly the same, because the underlying architecture of a modern television is broadly the same. In rough order of how often we see them:
- Power supply faults — the set is dead, or clicks, or shows a flashing red standby light and will not turn on. Very commonly repairable at component level. Frequently linked to surges and unstable supply.
- Backlight failure — the television has sound and menus respond, but the screen looks black. Shine a torch at an angle and you can often see the faint image. Repairable on many models depending on the backlight design.

- T-CON and panel-side faults — lines, bands, half-screen problems. Sometimes a board, sometimes the panel itself, and the difference is the difference between a sensible repair and a write-off.
- Cracked panels — almost never economical to replace. The panel is the single most expensive component in the television.

On parts: Hisense benefits from its local manufacturing and distribution presence, and common boards for mainstream models are generally straightforward to source. Samsung's mainstream models are equally well served because the volumes are enormous. Where both brands get difficult is at the extremes — a flagship model from three or four years ago, or an obscure size that sold in low numbers locally. If a specific board is discontinued, a competent workshop will attempt component-level repair rather than board replacement, which is often the only route left.

If your budget is fixed and you want the largest, best-specified television that money will buy, Hisense is the stronger choice. You will get more screen, more dimming zones and more features per rand than Samsung offers at the same price, and their local presence means the set is well supported.
If you care most about processing quality, long-term software support and the way the set handles ordinary broadcast content rather than pristine 4K, Samsung justifies its premium — particularly in the mid-range and above, where their scaling and motion handling remain a genuine advantage.
Two closing observations from the bench. First, buy the best mid-range set you can afford rather than the largest entry-level one; the jump in panel and backlight quality between those two tiers is far more noticeable day to day than the extra ten inches.
